MUSD Receives ASBO Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting!
Marana Unified School District (MUSD) has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting (COE) from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO), a mark of distinction that reflects the district’s dedication to financial transparency and responsible oversight.
A Team Effort Behind the Recognition
This recognition is the result of a year-long commitment by the district’s Financial Services Department, which plays a critical role in ensuring the fiscal health and transparency of the district. Leading this charge are Dan Contorno and Thomas Bogart, Chief Financial Officers, along with Kim Bellew, Business Manager, and a dedicated team of professionals who collectively manage the district’s financial reporting.
A Gold Standard in Financial Reporting
The Certificate of Excellence is awarded to school districts that meet the rigorous standards set by ASBO International for financial reporting and transparency. The Marana Unified School District received the award for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ended 2025.
ASBO International’s Executive Director, Jim Rowan, CAE, SFO, emphasized the importance of this award, saying, “For over half a century, ASBO International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting has been the gold standard in promoting and recognizing excellence in financial reporting. Communicating the financial and economic state of a district is so important when engaging with the school community and building their trust. Districts that receive the COE Award have demonstrated their ability to do that at the highest level.”
Financial Transparency as a Key Value
By participating in the Certificate of Excellence program, Marana Unified School District continues to demonstrate its commitment to financial transparency and effective fiscal management. The process involves submitting an ACFR for review by a panel of financial professionals, who provide constructive feedback to ensure the district’s future reports reflect the highest standards.
Once a district’s report meets these stringent criteria, it earns the Certificate of Excellence, a symbol of trust and responsibility in handling taxpayer dollars. Additionally, participating in this program can enhance the district’s bond rating and aid in the continuing bond disclosure processes.
An 18-Year Tradition of Excellence
Marana Unified School District’s achievement is especially noteworthy considering the district has participated in the COE program for 18 years. This longstanding involvement underscores the district’s unwavering commitment to upholding best practices in financial reporting, year after year.
A Bright Future Ahead
This recognition not only highlights the district’s excellent financial management but also serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public education. As MUSD continues to grow and serve its students and community, this prestigious award assures stakeholders that the district is committed to sound financial stewardship.
The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Marana Unified School District team, ensuring that the district’s financial future remains in capable hands.
